Suggestion Wizard archetypes.

well, heres a suggestion which im sure has been heavily suggested and is to be implemented; Wizard schools of magic and the ways magic is called upon.

if your not clear on the types of magic user, il clear it up from a general mythology standpoint:

Witches are not female wizards, but magic users who specialise in the body.

Wizards are not male witches, but magic users who specialise in the world.

Sorcerers are magic casters who gain their power from their bloodline, not the world.

Warlocks are people who do not own their own power, but have made a pact with a patron for it.

Paladins are magic users who gain their power from a dedication to their oath.

Clerics/priests are magic users who gain power from a deity, in order to spread their teachings.

Druids are magic users who gain their power from the concept of nature itself.

Shamens are magic users who gain their power from the forces of life, the elements, and the abstract.

Bards are magic users who use music to manipulate the vale, basically weaving magic itself from the world without using it themselves.

Now, that was alot of info, but there is a reason for me to delve into this. i believe it would be both good for the RP section of an MMORPG to provide accurate backstory as to how each person gains their magical power, aswell as advantages and disadvantages to each class. whilst i would not suggest limiting users to only picking one, and then being locked in and limited to magic within those catagories, but instead allow them to pick one to start off with, and then have to complete a specific chain of quests within the world.

Lets make an example out of this, Jimmy is a Wizard who uses Evocation (damaging) magic. Jimmy however, Has began to seek other types of power from the world, wanting to unlock spells and abilities from other classes. he hears rumours of an npc in the backstreets of Dalaran, and upon hunting down this npc he finds Grimour, a cultist of the Great Old one. I will be using the Warlock as an example here because it is the easiest to explain.

Grimour offers a deal to Jimmy, saying if he is willing to help retrieve the segments of a sacraficial dagger, they may consider allowing him to join their ranks as a follower. Jimmy hunts far and wide across the land, finding the blade, handle and grip of this sacraficial dagger, catching glimpses of beings within the darkness and carrying the sensation of eyes locked upon him in the dark. upon turning the blade into Grimour and is lead into the sewers, eventually stumbling upon a large cultist hideout. he offers himself up to the shrine of the great old one, and is thus rewarded in turn with access to the warlock spell/skill list.

BUT what Jimmy has not considered, is the cost of power. no patron would dare make a deal that did not benefiet them, and thus Jimmy is locked into a Pact, forcing him to carry out a particular task every so often to keep his power. for example, i would suggest that he has to kill another player character (that is not on their friend list, guild or other form of faction to avoid exploitation) out in the world at least once per season whilst marking the body as a kill of the great old one, and until he does so he will have his power heavily limited.

whilst that was just an example, i believe it could be genuinely good for the RP setting of the server, with there being advantages and disadvantages to specing into the different classes of caster. warlocks are powerfull by nature, but their cost is the pact that anchors them to their patron. this is a very specific example of course, but im hoping you can understand where i am coming from this. i am more than happy to explain or elaborate on anything if anyone is curious, but as a large fantasy fan i would love to have access to this sort of thing.

thanks for reading!

upon reconsideration, i think i should have called this thread Magic Archetypes, rather than Wizard archetypes. sorry everyone! i just confused things hehe

I'm a bit confused on what this suggestion is about. Are you suggesting each magic using class is given the ability to choose any archetype, which I dont see happening or that the lore behind each class is more accurate to their actual archetype, which I do think is already the case or they are a bit more simplified.

to be perfectly honest, i was suggesting breaking the magic using classes down into these catagories. it was a hell of a mess to try and communicate, so sorry if it didnt make too much sense heh

I do believe these will be the splits anyways besides sorcerer, wizard and witch being all categorized under the general term of Mage, though i guess any magic user could be considered a mage. In some cases a mage is the strongest of magic users, besides archmages, or theyre wizards whove learnt to cast magic without the aid of staves or wands

What you have suggested is already a thing in dyescape, the mage class can specialize in different "branches", also the lore part is already done.
