Hey guys, Kabby here.

I've been thinking about some mechanics relating to the movement of players. I have a very "simple" question to ask.

How much mobility, is too much?

I've always loved very mobile classes in MMOs, as they seem the most fun classes to play instead of standing still just using all your skills on CD. Thief has always been my favorite class to play in GW2 and I always seek to play the most mobile classes in MMOs. But when I was thinking about Dyescape and the potential future classes I was very split on how much mobility is good for the game. On one hand, the currently revealed class skills maybe have like 3 skills that have some sort of mobility and movement, but they are mainly speed boosts or short dashes. This might be the amount of mobility that the content team wants, or is just how much mobility these classes are supposed to have. Maybe with more branches, the classes get more mobility, but we won't know that till they're revealed. But on the other hand, I still crave for a class with a massive amount of mobility. The kind of mobility that thief has in GW2 is you first teleport 30m in a shadow step. Then you teleport to the opponent, dealing a quick burst of damage before using a few leaps and spins to get away from them while dealing damage. Then you use shadow step to return to the original position where you shadow stepped to, going into stealth to burst the opponent again.

Obviously having too much mobility might break certain mechanics or they can just overwhelm the opponent so I'm asking the rest of the community what they think is the appropriate amount of mobility would be for the class with the most mobility.

When replying make sure to specify a few things. Roughly how many skills, long or short CDs, how much font drain and how much damage should a mobile class have.

I've added a poll to vote for what you think is a reasonable amount of mobility skills for the MOST mobile class.

I'll be leaving a few videos down here to show some of the most mobile classes in MMOs watching these might help you answer.

The answer is simple: It's all relative.

If we exclude quests mechanics and the size of the map for a moment -- you can primarily base it off of the other classes. The extremes of each class type should match one another. For example, the tankiest, heavily armored kit should be just as tanky as the quickest mobility class. Now it isn't exactly a 1:1 ratio, and it does depend on the subclasses, how big the map is, and how much of a factor traveling should be - but it is a good measure to know roughly how the extreme of each class should be in general.

Now personally, I think a class that can continuously use its mobility abilities (i/e use an ability to move, then be able to cycle through without stop due to cooldown/font regen allowing so) is OP. Players should not be whizzing through at the speed of light where they can literally run circles around other players. And if you want to make that the case, then you'd need to heavily nerf the armor/health of said class to make it viable (although I wouldn't make it that quick in the first place).

For the poll, it all depends on the abilities itself. If theres a movement-specific class, then I'd expect it to have 4-6 (6+ is a bit much imo).

First of all, thanks for replying, I've been waiting for one for a bit.

Obviously, you don't want a class that only has movement abilities, that would be absurd. But what I'm looking for is a class that has mobility, unlike the other classes. You could possibly give the most mobile class an extra resource of sorts, maybe like energy or "Shadow points" or something that lets them use these teleporting and leaping abilities. That way they can still use their normal damaging moves without having all their font drained on the movement abilities. With GCD spamming abilities Isn't possible, always having like 1.5-2 seconds of downtime between movement abilities. That paired with medium length CDs would make it seem fairly balanced. Regarding health and armor, I think the class should have light armor but still decent amounts of health as then tracking skills and AoEs just don't demolish them, though those might just be the counter to balance them out. I obviously would want to have a class with stupid movement so we could remake the demon hunter video I linked where the guy just destroyed the dungeons by clipping and exploiting. But yeah I do think that having 4-6 maybe 8 max is a good number. I'll wait for other peoples' opinions if they ever reply to this thread.
