Claiming territories

Greetings Dyescape! I hope you are all doing well.

I was thinking that perhaps there could be a feature where certain guilds or individual players can earn an honorary title such as Lord, Duke, or Baron over a specific territory.

After gaining a special loot item or doing a noble deed on the server, or perhaps even a special quest, they can be appointed ruler over a territory or kingdom.

We should also have a feature where players can rent rooms in taverns and such.

I'm fairly fond of this idea, but the names of donator ranks follow this theme. Duke and Baron are both donator ranks, so they wouldn't be a good choice here (even though they sound fitting). Other things to ask would be are there requirements for becoming the Lord of particular provinces? What kind of benefits are there and what would it mean for other players?

As for taverns, what would make a player want to stop by one, besides maybe the roleplay aspect?

There could be benefits to renting a house in a town for instance. Storage space, financial benefit on local markets (small discounts), etc (up to the content team to decide). Renting a house in a city could be achieved using phasing for instance because the same building can be rented out to different people, but upon entering the building, it may look different for each individual player.

It may be best to go into more detail about how you imagine claiming territories to work. Problem is the world is stateless; you cannot break or place blocks unless its phased. We also hope to serve as many players as possible, so the solution needs to properly scale. Having an x amount of territories be available while we would constantly increase playercount isn't very scalable and you'd end up with the problem Wynn has with their guilds. It may be best to await our guilds feature.

Time for Kabby's wall of text!

Claiming Territories can be done a few ways and the content team has a few decision to make.

First of all, Who should be able to claim land?

Players who pay a little sum of money - Very accepting and eaqual to everyone, but will most likely run into space problems
Players who pay a large sum of money - Might seem like too much of a challenge for someone, or too much of a sink in gold for people to not find appealing.

Guilds who pay a little sum of money - Makes it so there are a bit less need for spacing, but will most likely run into a problem with people creating very small guilds to claim land.
Guilds who pay a large sum of money - Probably the best way, as long as every guildie gets benefit. A good goal for every guild and would reducce the amount of small guilds getting land.

Now that is sorted so, How does someone claim territory?

Paying money - Very obvious, land would be priced around location, resources and convinience. Players could buy each others land.
Conquering with PvP / PvE - Creates guild competetition, a weekly / monthly event where a massive war happens in the world that would need a lot of effort.
Staking your claim - Every player gets an amount of space they can claim and then they just claim it like a typical factions claim.

That's cool and all, but How does the world not run out of space?

A way to get other people's land - Ways addressed above
Make it very expensive to get land - This makes it so not everyone is able to get land
Make a separate world for claiming land - Makes it so there is a lot of space for claiming land, could lead to other benefits.
Buildings need constant maintanance - You have to deposit materials depending on all the buildings in your territory to keep it from breaking down. This makes it so players cant leave the server for long periods of time and keep their territories. With this, constantly new territory is becoming available.

Now that I have land, what do I do with it?

Collect Resources on your land - Set up mines, farms, forestries, bushes, fishing ponds and other resource collecting stations. Could also have once a day gatherable resources that other wise are hard to get.
Craft items - Create crafting stations to create items.
Tax - Tax Npc items purchases in the area you have claimed
Create buildings to create towns, castles and cities - Might not be possible, but would be cool

Dennis already addressed some of these benefits, and benefits for houses in towns and cities.
